You should spend some time on choosing your bindings. These are vital in the success of your wakeboarding experience, your comfort, and safety. Your bindings should be snug but not too tight. Beginners will fall starting out and you do not want to risk a broken ankle or other serious injury.
The bindings are made up of the overlay, underlay, hardware, base plate, and footbed.
The overlay provides the majority of the support to your feet. The overlay pulls the toe and heels together and creates a snug, secure attachment to your board. The standard overlay has 2 overlays that criss-cross in front of and behind the foot and lock down to the hardware around the ankle and fore foot. They are designed to offer foot and ankle support.
The underlay makes contact with the top of your foot, the Achilles tendon area and are made up of foam and rubber. They can be very flexible or very stiff. The stiffer the underlay the better support it will provide.
The hardware is usually made up of nylon or metal. This is the binding agent that holds all of the pieces together and supports the side of your foot. It should be ergonomically correct.
The placement of your bindings on the wakeboard is of the utmost importance; having them properly set up will provide you comfort and will match your riding skill level. First you will need to determine which foot is forward. If you are not sure which foot, simply stand with your feet together and eyes closed. Ask someone to gently push you forward and whatever foot you use to maintain your balance is the foot you should put forward when placing your feet on the wakeboard.
Most wakeboards and binding plates come with pre-drilled holes that allow you to change the angle and position on the board. The width at which you should place the bindings can easily be determined by simply jumping in the air and when you land on the ground the width in which your feet are apart is generally a good gauge as to the placement on the board. It is generally shoulder width apart.
